Surgical Treatment of Hyperparathyroidism

Abstract
To the Editor: It is ironic that Albert, the very first patient operated upon successfully for hyperparathyroidism (in 1925), had an inadequate operation1 in that Dr. Mandl resected only "the adenoma." Albert had a temporary remission of his symptoms, only to suffer an exacerbation within a few months. Mandl was persuaded to re-explore the patient, but Albert died shortly thereafter of the sequela of recurrent hyperparathyroidism.We believe your readers may be interested in learning the main thrust of our book, recently reviewed here (N Eng J Med 291:109, 1974).
