Abstract
Digestibility data obtained in 4 × 4 latin square digestion trials with equines and steers were subjected to simple and multiple regression analyses to predict the capacity of equines to digest several components of forages. The independent variables were forage component digestion coefficient values obtained with steers and the crude fiber and protein in the dry matter of forages. Each was used alone and in combination to determine the degree of the linear relationship with the respective equine digestion coefficients of components of forages. The resulting simple and multiple regression equations are presented for predicting the digestibility of components of forages by equines. Crude fiber content was the best single predictor of all digestibilities. Including other predictors added relatively little accuracy to predictions, except for crude fiber digestibility.
