Abstract
Coliforms and enterococci were found in comparable numbers in water samples from 595 wells in Kansas. Statistical evaluation showed the association was not due to chance. Isolation of 424 strains of enterococci from 80 wells yielded 284 strains of Streptococcus fecalis and 140 strains with atypical characteristics. It is concluded that a test for the entire enterococcus group is the method of choice and the test is most useful when coliform values are low or fluctuating. Keywords
