Evaluation of the neutral position of the subtalar joint

Abstract
The authors discuss measurement of subtalar joint neutral position and its importance to an accurate biomechanical examination. A variety of techniques for its measurement have been used interchangeably; however, a review of the literature has failed to reveal any evidence that results using those different techniques were comparable. Data were collected from 138 subjects, using three of these techniques (palpation of the subtalar joint, observation of skin lines over the sinus tarsi, and observation of malleolar curvatures). The results of measurements taken using these three techniques were compared statistically, and a 95 % correlatin between techniques was indicated. Confidence in the results obtained by any of these techniques will increase reliability of this important biomechanical measurement.
