Abstract
Measurements on the rate of growth of crystals of lysozyme chloride from saline solutions show that between 5 and 1% w/v lysozyme crystal growth is controlled by a surface nucleation process. Measurements of Schlichtkrull on insulin crystallisation are in agreement with this growth mechanism. Values of crystal surface energies obtained from these results are close to those predicted from solubility data.On the basis of these results some general conclusions can be reached about the problems of growing large protein crystals. Keywords
