A fatalistic attitude to health amongst smokers in Cardiff

Abstract
A community survey of 4200 (83% response) members of the electoral register of Cardiff determined the smoking status of the respondents and their reply to a simple question which assessed their degree of fatalism. The response to this question was strongly associated with age and social class but not sex. The smokers were much more likely to give a fatalistic response which has led to a calculation which suggests that in this group 26% of smokers continue to do so in part due to their fatalistic attitude. Surprisingly the numbers of cigarettes smoked did not seem to be related to a fatalistic attitude.
