Abstract
The influence of the duration of the fast on a certain number of substances in the liver was studied in Wistar rats. From 3 hours without food onwards, hepatic concentrations of glycogen, pyruvate and lactate decreased. A sharp fall in citrate concentration was also observed, whereas malate increased. After 3 hours' fasting, acetyl-CoA increased, which produced stimulation of ketogenesis. After 15 hours, malate, citrate and acetyl-CoA tended to return to the original rates, whereas pyruvate and lactate remained lower than at the beginning and ketone bodies were present in large quantities. Keywords
