Abstract
The karyotype of the coelacanth is reported for the first time. Latimena chalumnae has a 48-chromosome karyotype that contains metacentnc, subtelocentnc, and telocentnc chromosomes as well as microchromosomes This karyotype is unlike those found in lungfishes but is very similar to the 46-chromosome karyotype of one of the ancient frogs, Ascaphus truei. Keywords
