Titanium is finding increasing use as a strong light metal having good corrosion resistance that results from stable passivity. As employed in most engineering applications the appearance of the metal is dull grey, but for decorative purposes this can be very much improved by polishing, by heat treatment and by anodizing. The techniques that can be employed to produce an attractive texture and appearance are described. The future employment of the metal for its aesthetic values is forecast and illustrated by reference to possible use in fields such as jewellery and architecture.
