Abstract
Modification of published methods for the preparation of cobalt(III) sulphate and its alums has enabled these substances, especially the cæsium alum, to be obtained in a condition in which they can be preserved for several weeks. The magnetic, spectroscopic, and crystallographic properties of the cæsium alum have been investigated in detail, and the stabilisation of the Co(H2O)6 3+ ion with respect to the high-spin state is discussed. Keywords
