On the Faint Chandra X-ray Sources in the Galactic Center
Abstract
Recent deep Chandra surveys of the Galactic center region have revealed the existence of a low luminosity hard X-ray point source population. It has been proposed that a majority of these sources can be explained by main sequence - neutron star (MS-NS) binary systems in which the neutron stars are fed by a stellar wind. In this investigation, a population synthesis study of the Galactic center region has been carried out, and it is found that systems composed of low mass white dwarfs transferring matter via Roche lobe overflow to their neutron star companions may significantly contribute to this X-ray population. In particular, such binaries are expected to be transient and may account for the majority of low luminosity X-ray point sources in the Galactic center. Keywords
