Abstract
The mechanism of extension of the rostrum is based on the activity of the muscles which run from the gena to the tips of the posterior cornua of the fulcrum. These muscles have previously been erroneously ascribed the function of retractors of the fulcrum but are redefined as rostral protractors. A mechanism for the mode of action of neural feedback in the regulation of feeding threshold is proposed, based on the properties of the proboscis extension–retraction system.
