Abstract
More than 90% of the world's rice is produced in the Far East and Asia. Rice irrigation depends on the quality of the irrigation water, the change in the paddy soils under different water management, the irrigation methods, the drainage of the soil, the relationship between irrigation and public health, weed control, and many other factors. These aspects are reviewed with special emphasis on irrigation methods. The paper concludes with a suggestion that rotational irrigation—a method of controlled irrigation in order, quantity, and time—be adopted in view of the paramount importance of water resource development and improved agriculture in the development of Asian countries.
