Abstract
The ultrastructure of the thallus of the Lithothamnia appears to vary according to the degree of anatomical complexity. Notable are specializations of the external photosynthetic zones and the internal starch producing zones, a rhythmic production of calcified polysaccharide cell walls, and a variable functioning of the epithallus with characteristic resting stages.
