Inhibition of Hill Reaction and Photophosphorylation by l,l,l-Trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane

Abstract
The effect of DDT on DCIP and Fe(CN)63− photoreductions, and cyclic and non-cyclic photo-phosphorylations, in some 30 varieties of barley from widely different parts of the world is reported. Whereas resistant barleys were not affected by DDT treatment, chloroplasts from treated susceptible barleys showed parallel inhibitions of all the investigated aspects of photosynthesis. However, in a few susceptible varieties inhibitions of Fe(CN)63− photoreduction or non-cyclic photophosphorylation were not so pronounced. Possible reasons for these anomalies are discussed; in particular earlier reports that DDT had no effect on these latter photosynthetic activities may have been due to the use of hypotonic media during chloroplast isolation.
