Abstract
The electron density in a nebula may be determined from the ratio of the intensities of the O [ II ] lines 3726, 3729 A. Two instruments are described which were designed to measure O[ II ] intensity ratios. The first was a Fabry–Perot monochromator preceded by an interference filter. The second was a multislit photoelectric grating spectrometer. In the latter case a full description is given of the optical factors limiting the number of slits. Both instruments have been used with the 50-in. telescope at Asiago in observations of diffuse and planetary nebulae. The intensity ratios are compared with those obtained by more conventional techniques. Keywords
