Abstract
It is shown that the medium enhancement of the second-order correction to the real part of the S-wave pion-nucleus optical potential can explain most of the repulsion needed in fits of the level shifts in pionic atoms. The dispersive part of the absorptive contribution is of far smaller significance. Keywords
