Abstract
Helical pitch periodicity and periodic unwinding lines are related structures appearing in twisted smectics. Measurement of pitch probably often involves observation of unwinding lines and effects from them. The problem of their interplay is reviewed by considering different methods of pitch measurement. Keywords
