Abstract
During the past year, there has been a noteworthy shift in public expressions of apprehension about the future. This shift can be seen in the selection of a new date for the culmination of threatening developments: until recently, “1984” symbolized the turning point; now 1983 is increasingly cited. Of course, these dates also differ because 1984 symbolizes a long-observed trend in the development of the state, while 1983 has direct meaning as a real deadline: it is the year NATO intends to station tactical nuclear missiles on European soil. With this step, mass-murder of the European population becomes more likely.
