Chapter 2: Issues of Race and Ethnicity in Supervision

Abstract
Race and ethnic diversity are sensitive and frequently ignored issues with deep historical roots that impact on all modern black/white or majority/minority relationships. Relationships between client/therapist, therapist/supervisor, and supervisor/institution are significant factors that should be openly addressed in effective psychotherapy. Supervisors have the dual role of helping therapists explore their own and their clients' attitudes in this area, while also clarifying institutional policy on racial themes. Each of these areas receives attention in this paper, and case examples provide specific illustrations.
