Abstract
The Pycnogonida of Plymouth are revised. 12 spp. have been seen by the author and 4 others recorded previously, making 16 spp. in all, mostly from shallow waters. A new species, Phoxichilidium tubulariae, is described which has hitherto been confused with P. femoratum. Anoplo-dactylus angulatus has been added to the British fauna. The spp. of the family Phoxichilidiidae were much con-fused and they have had special attention. Phoxichilidium viriscens Hodge truly belongs to that genus and Ano-plodactylus petiolatus (Kroyer) and A. pygmaeus (Hodge) are separate species. Phoxichilidium exiguum Dohrn ia synonymous with A. pygmaeus (Hodge). The larvae of the Phoxichilidiidae live in hydroids and distinct differences are seen in the habitats of the various spp. Thus in Phoxichilidium femoratum the larvae are enclosed in cysts formed round them by Syncoryne eximia, while those of P. tubulariae occur in the gastric cavity of Tubularia. In Ano-plodactylus petiolatus they are found in the medusae of Obelia and relatives; in A. pygmaeus they are in the Obelia polyps.
