Abstract
Helgason T, The epidemiology of depressions. The epidemiology of depression is reviewed in the light of some recent studies. A distinction is made between depressive symptoms and syndromes. The prevalence of depressive symptoms is 16-17% among the adult population. Approximately one-third of this is due to clinical depressive syndromes. One-third of the patients or less is under treatment. The disease expectancy for depressive syndromes is 12-16% (18%) for men and 18-23% (33%) for women. A considerable proportion of the excess depressive morbidity among women can probably be explained by social and/or psychologic factors. As the overall psychiatric morbidity is similar among men and women, the possibility of differential symptom formation with common etiologic factors must he kept in mind. Keywords
