To the Editor: In their excellent review of epidemiologic aspects of Type I diabetes and its complications (Nov. 26 issue),1 Krolewski et al. concentrated on retinopathy, nephropathy, and cardiovascular disease.1 Neuropathy was not covered, perhaps because there is no agreement on the minimal criteria for diagnosis and because of the unsuitability of sophisticated investigative techniques2 , 3 for epidemiologic studies.We have recently examined the prevalence of peripheral and autonomic neuropathy in a cross-sectional study of 506 persons with insulin-dependent diabetes (12 to 85 years of age).
