Abstract
This paper was presented to the Fifth British Empire Forestry Conference in London, 1947, and is reprinted here with the kind permission of the Director of Forestry. This paper describes an experiment, initiated in 1923, designed to show the relative repellence of various wood preservatives when in contact with the ground and exposed to the ravages of termites, attended by other destructive agencies. The efficacy of the preservatives is disclosed in a tabular statement, giving the average life of each in years. The older methods of preservation are discussed and their weaknesses disclosed. The experience gained in a pilot experiment provided a valuable guide for the design of a replicated experiment initiated in 1945, which included what is believed to be a new technique with which to ensure radial penetration of liquids into wood, of optimum depth with prescribed absorption. Keywords
