Abstract
A semiclassical approach is used to derive, and extend to first order in g-2, the equilibrium degree of polarization in high-energy electron storage rings (the Derbenev-Kondratenko formula). Statistical concepts are shown to be essential for an understanding of this phenomenon. In so doing, some aspects of the polarization mechanism not previously recognized are uncovered. Keywords
