Development trends in production work structuring

Abstract
The paper discusses changes in working conditions in West Germany and the possible approaches to work structuring pioneered by the Philips company. It then considers problems of evaluating alternative work systems and illustrates the application of the theoretical concepts in two examples, car radio and ignition distributor assembly. In both cases it was found that the conventional assembly line was not flexible enough to satisfy either the human needs or the production/marketing requirement.
