Seasonal Attack Periods of Cone-Feeding Insects of Loblolly Pine Cones

Abstract
The seasonal attack periods of insects infesting cones of loblolly pine, Pinus taeda L., were determined in a Louisiana seed orchard. Attacks by Dioryctria amatella (Hulst) occurred primarily from mid-Mar, to mid-Apr., early June to late July, and late Aug. to early Oct. Attacks by D. clarioralis (Walker) occurred from late May to early July. Additional attacks were suspected in late September, but populations of D. clarioralis were too low to be detected in cones. The cone midges, Asynapta sp. and Resseliella sp., attacked cones primarily in May and June, and were found most often in cones concurrently infested by D. amatella. External damage from unknown causes occurred from Mar. to May. Conelet abortion occurred throughout the year and was considered to be caused mostly by factors other than insect feeding.
