Abstract
The control program for egg-transmitted organisms (Salmonella pullorum, S. typhimurium, and Arizona paracolon) used in San Diego County has been outlined. This program is basically similar to the S. pullorum-S. typhimurium control used throughout the State of California, with certain additions made to suit local needs. The program is based on the following principles: 1) Stocking the breeding ranch from a known clean source. 2) Bacteriological sampling of all poult mortality up to 21 days of age. 3) Tube agglutination testing of all potential breeding stock with antigens for the 3 diseases. 4) Routine bacteriological examination of samples of 10-day-dead embryos from the hatchery. Two case histories were presented to illustrate infections occurring in breeding stock despite the elaborate precautions of the control program. Evidence indicates that indigenous wildlife rats and mice provided the reservoirs for these infections. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
