Abstract
Basal metabolism tests were made on 14 selected [female] rats which showed regular cycles of from 4 to 5 days'' duration. The data of 9 of these rats were used in the paper. The oestrous cycle was determined by the vaginal smear method of Long and Evans. The basal metabolism was determined by the modified gravimetric method of Haldane and computations were based on CO2 excreted. The results are reported in terms of calories per 24 hrs. per sq. m. of body surface. Surface area= S = KW2/3. The author concludes that in the rat during the last 10 hrs. of Stage V (dioestrum) and in the 1st 6 hours of State I (proestrum) there is a rise of 5 to 20% in the basal metabolic rate, the average rise at this time being 13%.This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
