Abstract
Minimal inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC, MBC) of 10 antibiotics with broad spectra against gram-positive cocci were determined for 25 group G streptococci (GGS). Penicillin G, cefotaxime and ampicillin were the most active bactericidal agents, with 100% of MBC .ltoreq. 0.6 .mu.g/ml. Among the nonpenicillin, noncephalosporin agents, vancomycin had the lowest MBC, with all strains killed by .ltoreq. 2.5 .mu.g/ml. Despite good in vitro activity against other streptococci, erythromycin, clindamycin and chloramphenicol had disappointing bactericidal activity against GGS. Three strains were tolerant to erythromycin; 15 strains were tolerant to clindamycin. Chloramphenicol was the least active inhibitory agent, with an MIC90 [90% MIC] of 13.8 .mu.g/ml; this agent was also the least active bactericidal agent against GGS, with no MCB < 2.5 .mu.g/ml and 9 strains with MBC .gtoreq. 20 .mu.g/ml. There were no GGS strains tolerant to penicillin G or vancomycin. [Gentamicin, cefoxitin and cephalothin were also studied.].This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
