Abstract
While the prodigy phenomenon has recently begun to receive attention, the gifts and fates of girl prodigies have largely remained unnoted. This article represents an effort to call attention to the existence of extraordinary talent in young girls by collecting, for the first time, a number of cases of girls’ early prodigious achievements. The ways in which the cultural milieu impacts the appearance and development of girl prodigies are discussed, including: (a) cultural support for girls’ achievements; (b) educational opportunities,” and [c] the media which influence the kinds of individuals singled out for public attention. The author wishes to thank Margaret L. Adams, T.J. Anderson, Jeanne Bamberger, Jie‐Qi Chen, John Collins, David Henry Feldman, Mark Ogonowski and Ronald E. Walton for their suggestions and comments on earlier drafts of this paper. Support for the preparation of the article was provided by a grant from the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation to David Henry Feldman. Keywords
