Home Safety and Accident Prevention in a Child Health Conference

Abstract
In 1951 the Bureau of Child Health instituted a 3-fold program to study non-fatal accidents in the pre-school child, and to develop techniques for prevention of accidents. The program includes staff education, parent education, and epidemiological studies. The medical and nursing staffs receive appropriate training. The health team helps parents develop safe home environments and safe practices among children. Physicians in child health stations submit reports of accidents to children registered in New York City child health stations. The reports include such data as previous history of accidents to child and siblings, descr. of accident, emotional or physical disturbances present, etc. Physicians instruct parents for fome safety and accident prevention based on child''s stage of growth and development, family background, home environment, etc. Reporting of accidents by physicians provides data on non-fatal accidents and a good health education medium for the health team, including the parent, focusing attention on the problem of accidents and their control. The Home Safety and Accident Prevention Program is now in its 3d yr., and data are presented on 981 children with 1000 mishaps.
