SO x ( x = 2 , 3 ) Sensor Using Ag+‐β‐Alumina Solid Electrolyte

Abstract
Ag+‐β‐alumina was applied as a solid electrolyte for the sensor. The following two galvanic cells were assembled and EMF measurements taken: [ I ], and [ II ]. The measured EMF of cell [ I ] was approximately equal to the calculated value. Cell [ II ] showed a good EMF response to changes in the partial pressure of . A linear relationship was observed between the EMF of cell [ II ] and the logarithm value of the partial pressure of . However, a large difference was observed between the experimental and the calculated EMF's for cell [ II ]. Using electron probe x‐ray microanalyzer, the formation of a reaction layer was confirmed on the surface of the Ag+‐β‐alumina used in cell [ II ]. From the experimental results, it was deduced that the reaction layer was a compound from the system, which was formed by the reaction of Ag+‐β‐alumina with gas. The EMF of cell [ II ] was stable for constant partial pressure over a period greater than three months.
