Abstract
The effects of anisotropic exchange have been investigated using the optical spectrum of isolated Er3+ impurities in ferromagnetic Tb ( OH ) 3 . Due to simplifications resulting from the nature of the system, the exchange effects can be isolated from those of other interactions and analyzed using an effective operator applicable to all levels of the Er3+ ion. A least squares fit using four parameters has provided a good description of both the signs and magnitudes of eleven observed splittings. The resulting contributions of the anisotropic terms are generally an order of magnitude larger than that of the isotropic exchange in this case, indicating that any realistic analysis of ion‐ion interactions involving ions with large orbital admixtures must consider the effects of anisotropy in the exchange interaction.
