Abstract
Histochemical investigation of basement membranes of human thyroid glands showed severe diffuse degenerative changes and discontinuities only in chronic thyroiditis, both independently and accompanying the lymphocytic infiltration. This is suggestive morphologic evidence that a major factor in the pathogenesis of chronic thyroiditis may be the failure to maintain an effective structural continuity of the thyroid basement membrane. Keywords
