Abstract
Describes a new marine snake, Pterosphenus sheppardi from upper Eocene localities of Ecuador. This species is less specialized than contemporaneous northern forms (known only from Alabama and north Africa). It is concluded that Pterosphenus cannot have derived from specialized forms of Palaeophis, such as P. typhaeus, but from an earlier form such as P. toliapicus. Differentiation into species was divergent rather than linear.
