Abstract
The excitability of abdominal reflexes in the rat was investigated during varying degrees of passive pulmonary inflation with 100% O2 or with low concentrations of CO2 in oxygen. Hyperventilation was found to produce inhibition of abdominal muscle reflexes not referable to hypocapnia or hypotension. Possible mechanisms involved in the inhibition of abdominal reflexes during hyperventilation were discussed.
