Abstract
To the Editor: In the issue of October 30 (293:941–942, 1975) I commented on three sudden deaths occurring in long-distance runners and suggested that ischemic heart disease was the cause of death. The question is whether these three case reports in any way contradict Dr. Bassler's hypothesis (N Engl J Med 294:114, 1976). It therefore becomes important to know more clearly what his hypothesis is. There have been various statements that can be attributed to Dr. Bassler, including the following: "We have been unable to document a single death from ischaemic heart disease among marathon finishers of any age" . . .
