Abstract
In this paper the low status of adult education within the wider educational community is examined and related to (a) the content of adult education, (b) the structure of adult education and (c) the educational process itself. The Cinderella status of adult education is regarded as an important issue for two reasons. Firstly, the Russell Report (1973) has emphasized the need for an integrated, comprehensive educational service covering both school and adult life ‐‐ an aim that at the present moment is myth rather than reality. Secondly, within adult education are focused some of the fundamental problems of education today, especially the conflict between the interests of teachers as a professional group and the demands of a student‐centred pedagogy. Keywords
