Abstract
The application of approximately 0.4% of crude petroleum to the surface of a soil reduced nitrification 1/2, whereas the same amount mixed with the soil caused a much greater reduction. Approximately 1 % crude petroleum mixed with the soil practically checked nitrate formation. Even smaller amounts of crude petroleum mixed with the soil had a very depressing effect. Crude petroleum applied at the rate of 500 gal. per acre either on the surface or mixed with the surface soil delayed germination of wheat seed. The surface application at this rate did not reduce the final stand but the mixed application reduced the final stand by approximately one-fourth. Twenty-five hundred gal. of crude petroleum applied to the surface soil did not decrease the final stand but delayed germination materially.
