Abstract
Some reasons for mothers' failure to breastfeed or to continue with breastfeeding are discussed, based on qualitative data from a questionnaire completed by mothers bringing up children over the last twenty years. The family, cultural and economic context in which mothers make their decisions about infant feeding and carry them through and the multiple determinants of breastfeeding are emphasised. Keywords
