Abstract
The results of a five years' investigation of the effects of lightning on transmission systems are reviewed. It is concluded that direct strokes play a prominent part in causing flashover. Induced strokes are also important. Conventional overhead ground wires with low tower footing resistance take care of direct strokes, as well as induced strokes, and prevent flashover. The mechanism of the lightning stroke is not yet understood, but the indications are that polarity effects are highly important and must be given full consideration.Keywords
