Neurosurgical complications affecting the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducent nerves

Abstract
Data are presented from 60 patients with alteration of function of one or more of the cranial nerves to extraocular muscles as a result of neuro-surgical treatment for intracranial pathologic disorders, and 7 illustrative cases are presented. In most cases, these complications seemed to be clearly related to the trauma in the region of the course of one or more of these cranial nerves. The prognosis for recovery depends on the primary pathologic disease and the degree of damage to adjacent stuctures, including these cranial nerves. In general, if the nerve dysfunction is partial in the immediate postoperative period, the outlook for complete recovery is excellent. The data were analyzed regarding rate of recovery for nerves injured at different anatomic sites.
