Abstract
A report is presented of studies in Israel, 1958 and 1959. Statistics on consumption, arrests for alcohol-related offenses, and deaths from alcoholism are remarkably low compared with other people, and in view of the absence of restrictions by law or moral tradition. Cultural factors are discussed as explanations religious standards and practices, strength of family ties in which both security and festivity center, powerful sanctions against excess, and the social dynamic of the people in building the new Israel (as distinguished from individualism). The latter is illustrated from life in a kibbutz. Keywords
