Abstract
To the Editor: In the recent report of Dawber et al. (N Engl J Med 291:871, 1974) it was concluded that coffee drinking is not a factor in the development of coronary-artery disease. Before this conclusion is accepted, some aspects of their methods ought to be given careful consideration.The authors' interpretation of their data involves the assumption that individual coffee-drinking habits, like smoking, remain stable over long periods. Even though they assure the reader that during their 16-year follow-up period there had been "almost no change" in coffee-drinking habits, their data seem to contradict this assertion.
