Abstract
Investigations into the migratory patterns of reared cod have been a central part of an enhancement study in western Norway. From September to November 1983, 20 947 reared juvenile cod were tagged and released at three sites in western Norway. Tag returns to 1 January 1988 from the three groups were 16.0%, 2.0%, and 20.6%, respectively. More than 96% of the cod were recaptured in shallow nearshore waters less than 10 km from the release sites, and only one cod had migrated more than 100 km. No tags were recovered offshore. The results indicate a weak size-dependent dispersion. The movements showed no marked preferential directionality, and no indications of spawning migrations were found. There were no obvious differences between the migratory patterns of reared and wild (indigenous) cod tagged as juveniles in the same area. Keywords
