Assessing Teachers’ Planning Abilities

Abstract
While teacher educators encourage teachers to acquire professional knowledge relevant to planning instruction for children, they lack systematic methods for evaluating teachers" abilities to apply such knowledge. This article describes the development of a set of simulation exercises designed to assess teachers" abilities to make typical planning decisions, and presents results of an item analysis obtained when the exercises were given to 72 students entering a two- year teacher education program.
