Design of High Power Electromagnets

Abstract
This paper consists of three parts: In Part I, the general principles of electromagnet design are discussed, particularly the shape of pole pieces suitable for attaining a simultaneous saturation magnetization throughout the pole and also suitable for producing a strong field at the center of the pole gap. In Part II, a practical procedure for designing an electromagnet is discussed on the basis of economical considerations. In Part III, the actual designs of a bent double-yoke magnet and a large Bitter-type magnet are presented together with experimental data on the completed magnets.
