Monensin Fortied Corn Supplements in Combination with Testosterone-Estradiol Implants and Vaginal Devices for Finishing Heifers on Pasture

Abstract
Sixty crossbred heifer calves were fed to slaughter weights using a grain-on-grass finishing system. As a supplement to annual ryegrass pasture, five lots were fed cracked shelled corn ad libitum and five lots were fed the same corn diet plus 66 ppm monensin. Two heifers within each lot were not treated, two heifers were implanted with testosterone-estradiol implants (Synovex-H®) and two heifers were fitted with vaginal devices (HEI-GRO®). Monensin additions did not affect (P>.05) average daily gain but did reduce (P<.05) corn intake and improve (P<.05) supplemental corn/or ryegrass pasture utilization. Monensin reduced ad libitum intake of the cracked corn supplement by an average of 25% and thus indicated promise as a desirable intake limiter of supplement when cattle are self-fed on pasture. Implanted heifers gained faster (P<.05) than control or deviced heifers. Treatment had no effect on carcass characteristics. Copyright © 1978. American Society of Animal Science .
