Abstract
The cyclic nitrone, 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline 1-oxide, has been shown to react with diethyl malonate, under basic conditions, to yield 4-ethoxycarbonyl-8,8-dimethyl-2-oxa-1-azabicyclo[3,3,0]octan-3-one. Reduction of this product with lithium aluminium hydride yielded 2-(1-hydroxy-5,5-dimethylpyrrolidin-2-yl)propane-1,3-diol, while thermal degradation produced ethyl (5,5-dimethylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene)acetate.Keywords
